At least 20 people were injured on Thursday when a vehicle rammed into a group of pedestrians in Munich, authorities reported. The incident occurred near downtown around 10:30 am, but officials have yet to confirm whether it was intentional. Munich police stated on X that the driver was taken into custody at the scene and no longer poses a threat. Images from the location showed a damaged Mini at the site of the crash. According to the fire department, several victims sustained serious injuries, as reported by the German news agency dpa. Munich’s Mayor, Dieter Reiter, expressed his shock over the event and confirmed that children were among the injured.
At the time of the incident, members of the service workers’ union ver.di were holding a demonstration nearby. However, it remains unclear if any protesters were among the casualties. The incident comes just a day before the Munich Security Conference, a high-profile international event focusing on foreign and security policies, set to begin on Friday. Increased security measures are expected in the city in the coming days.
