National Security Adviser Ajit Doval is set to visit Moscow this week to engage in discussions aimed at addressing the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to sources. This development follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent diplomatic efforts, including visits to Russia in July and Ukraine in August, where he met with Presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky, respectively.
Following his visit to Kyiv, Prime Minister Modi spoke with President Putin on August 27. During their conversation, Modi briefed Putin on his Ukraine trip and reaffirmed India’s dedication to achieving a resolution through diplomatic channels. It was during this call that the decision was made for NSA Doval to visit Moscow to further the peace process. The Russian Embassy noted that President Putin detailed his views on the conflict and Russia’s proposed solutions during the call.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi and Putin discussed the conflict and Modi emphasized the necessity of dialogue and practical engagement to reach a lasting peace. Modi reiterated India’s commitment to supporting a prompt and enduring resolution on his official X account.
Doval’s visit to Moscow is also part of the BRICS National Security Advisers’ meeting this week, held in preparation for the upcoming BRICS Summit in Kazan. The meeting will include top security officials from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, along with new BRICS members Saudi Arabia, UAE, Iran, Egypt, and Ethiopia. Doval is expected to hold bilateral discussions with Chinese NSA Wang Yi as well. The trip also underscores the global perspective that India could play a pivotal role in resolving the Ukraine conflict, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and others acknowledging India’s potential contribution to the peace process.
