On February 26, 2025, Kavneet Singh, a representative of the American Sikh Council (ASC), led a presentation for 12th-grade students at Barrack Hebrew Academy in Bryn Mawr, PA. The presentation was part of a comparative religions class, which is a regular part of the curriculum at this private Jewish day school, serving grades Middle through High School with about 350 students. Barrack Hebrew Academy is known for sending students to top universities across the country.
Kavneet Singh was invited to provide an overview of the Sikh religion, offering valuable insights on its history, beliefs, and practices. The students came well-prepared, as their teacher had encouraged them to ask questions. The engagement was lively, with students asking numerous questions, covering a range of topics, including faith, history, identity, current events, and even social issues such as bullying, bias, and the handling of the kirpan. Other topics discussed included key religious observances, interfaith issues, reincarnation, and even gay marriage. Singh responded thoughtfully to each inquiry, and many students took home brochures and additional materials for further reading.
The students and faculty at Barrack Hebrew Academy expressed their gratitude for the informative and interactive session. Rabbi Razin, a senior teacher at the academy, commented, “This year, we had even more interaction and questions than before! Though the time is always limited, we appreciate the chance to learn more.” ASC representatives have been invited to Barrack Hebrew Academy for several years to promote greater understanding, education, and mutual respect among different communities.
ASC continues to stress the importance of ongoing education and awareness, especially as society evolves. As Sikhs navigate these changing times, the community must remain vigilant and proactive in fostering greater understanding. Sikh Americans and gurdwaras are encouraged to support ASC’s nationwide efforts to educate and promote mutual respect.
