On Wednesday, Gandhi Jayanti was commemorated at Chaoyang Park in Beijing, where schoolchildren recited the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi in Mandarin. The event featured an Odissi dance performance by Beijing-based dancer Zhang Jinghui and her troupe, set to Gandhi’s beloved bhajan, “Vaishnav Jan To.”The celebration took place around Gandhi’s statue, sculpted by renowned Chinese artist Yuan Xikun and installed in 2005. Attendees included Indian diplomats, led by Ambassador Pradeep Kumar Rawat, and local admirers of Gandhi, who offered floral tributes at the statue.
Ambassador Rawat expressed gratitude to Yuan Xikun for creating the statue, emphasizing its significance as the first in Chaoyang Park honoring global leaders. He noted the historical context of the statue’s installation, reflecting on the contrasting ideologies of Gandhi and Mao Zedong during their respective national liberation movements. “Gandhiji was not only a leader of the Indian independence movement but also a visionary who advocated for truth, non-violence, and social justice,” Rawat stated. He highlighted the importance of observing Gandhi’s birthday as the International Day of Non-Violence, reinforcing the global relevance of his teachings.
