Violence erupted in Dagestan, Russia’s predominantly Muslim region, as assailants carried out a series of coordinated attacks targeting churches and a synagogue, resulting in a tragic death toll of 20 individuals. The attacks, which occurred in the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala, saw gunmen wielding automatic weapons storming religious sites and engaging in fierce gun battles with authorities.
In Derbent, known for its historical significance, an Orthodox church and a synagogue fell victim to the violence. The attackers desecrated religious symbols and took the life of 66-year-old Orthodox priest Nikolai Kotelnikov. Meanwhile, in Makhachkala, gunfire erupted near the Assumption Cathedral, accompanied by intense clashes that lasted well into the night. Videos captured scenes of chaos as residents sought refuge amidst billowing smoke.
Authorities reported casualties among both law enforcement and civilians, with 15 policemen and four civilians among the fatalities. Additionally, 46 people sustained injuries in the attacks. Local media documented the aftermath, showing several attackers shot dead on the streets.
“This is a day of tragedy for Dagestan and the entire nation,” remarked Sergei Melikov, the regional leader of Dagestan, during his visit to the sites of the assaults in Derbent. He suggested external involvement in the planning of the attacks, though specifics were not disclosed. The region declared three days of mourning, marked by tributes to fallen officers and solemn gatherings.
President Vladimir Putin, known for his concerns over Western influence in the Caucasus, has not yet issued a statement regarding the incidents.
