In a devastating escalation of violence, Russian ballistic missiles struck Poltava, a central-eastern Ukrainian city, resulting in at least 41 fatalities and injuring 180 others. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the tragic news on Tuesday, describing the attack as one of the deadliest since the conflict began over 900 days ago.
The missiles targeted an educational institution and a nearby hospital in Poltava, the regional capital situated approximately 110 kilometers from the Russian border and about 350 kilometers southeast of Kyiv. The strike hit shortly after an air raid alert, as many residents were seeking refuge in bomb shelters.
Zelenskyy, in a statement shared on his Telegram channel, reported that one of the buildings at the Institute of Communications was partially destroyed, trapping numerous individuals under debris. Emergency services were able to rescue 25 people, including 11 who were pulled from the rubble. Zelenskyy emphasized that a comprehensive and swift investigation into the incident has been ordered.
The Ukrainian Defence Ministry condemned the attack as “barbaric,” noting the rapid response of rescue and medical teams to the crisis.
