Delhi faced unprecedented rainfall, with over 100 mm recorded within an hour, leading to severe waterlogging across several areas and prompting authorities to issue a ‘red’ warning.
The India Meteorological Department’s Automatic Weather Station reported 112.5 mm of rainfall at the Pragati Maidan observatory, categorizing the event as a “cloud burst”. The National Flash Flood Guidance Bulletin flagged Delhi as a critical zone.
Authorities advised precautionary measures such as staying indoors, securing windows and doors, and avoiding unnecessary travel. The Delhi Lt Governor urged officials to prioritize addressing waterlogging issues, especially in vulnerable areas like coaching centres.
Traffic disruptions were reported in areas such as Lutyen’s Delhi and Kashmere Gate, with visuals showing vehicles navigating through flooded streets. The Delhi Traffic Police issued alerts and advised commuters to plan alternative routes.
The IMD forecasted continued rain and potential thunderstorms with lightning over the next few hours. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 37.8 degrees Celsius amidst the wet spell predicted to persist till August 5.
