President Donald Trump has declared his intent to impose tariffs on countries that “harm” the United States, specifically calling out China, India, and Brazil as nations with high tariffs. Addressing House Republicans during a Florida retreat on Monday, Trump emphasized his commitment to prioritizing American interests under his “America First” economic policy.
“We’re going to put tariffs on countries and entities that harm us. They may have their own reasons, but they ultimately disadvantage America,” Trump stated. He pointed to China as a “tremendous tariff maker,” along with India and Brazil, and vowed to prevent such practices from continuing.
The President announced plans to establish a “fair system” designed to channel revenue into American coffers, promising it would restore the US to unprecedented levels of wealth and power. “Instead of taxing American citizens to benefit foreign nations, we will tax and tariff those nations to enrich our citizens,” he added, echoing sentiments from his recent inaugural address.Trump also outlined how his tariff strategy would reduce taxes on American workers and businesses, bringing manufacturing jobs and factories back to the US. He highlighted the BRICS bloc, which includes India, as a potential target for “100 percent tariffs” in the future.
To avoid tariffs, Trump encouraged companies to set up manufacturing facilities within the United States. “If you want to stop paying these tariffs, build your plant right here in America. We’re creating incentives for this like never before,” he said. The President also pledged government support for industries such as pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and steel, aiming to drive a domestic manufacturing boom. Trump concluded by stating his administration’s ultimate goal: to create a prosperous and self-reliant America by putting American workers and businesses first.
