The US Department of the Treasury on Tuesday reassured that it remains dedicated to safeguarding the nation’s payment infrastructure and has not imposed any restrictions on federal spending. This statement, first reported by The New York Times, follows recent controversy over the decision to grant access to the payment system to Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
In a letter to members of Congress, the Treasury Department’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service (Fiscal Service) emphasized the importance of maintaining financial integrity and operational efficiency in federal payment systems. “The Fiscal Service disburses nearly 90 percent of all federal payments, processing over 1.2 billion transactions annually. Treasury remains committed to ensuring these systems operate at the highest levels of efficiency while upholding taxpayer expectations to prevent waste, fraud, and abuse,” the statement read.
The department underscored that its top priority is managing government finances responsibly, ensuring that the Fiscal Service continues to function securely without compromising economic stability. “Protecting the integrity of the payment system is paramount. The Treasury Department has been reviewing these systems, an initiative that began under the previous administration, to enhance payment security for federal agencies and the public,” it added.
Furthermore, the Treasury clarified that its operational efficiency review will continue, with select department staff, including Treasury employee Tom Krause, having read-only access to coded data from the Fiscal Service’s payment systems. This move, the department affirmed, is aimed at refining the system’s efficiency while upholding security standards.
