Billionaire Elon Musk faced online scrutiny on Monday for a hand gesture he made while addressing the crowd at an event celebrating President Donald Trump’s inauguration. Some social media users compared the gesture to a Nazi salute, though prominent antisemitism watchdogs have dismissed the claims as a misinterpretation of an enthusiastic moment. During his speech at the Capital One Arena in Washington, Musk received roaring applause as he exclaimed, “Yesssss!” He went on to describe the occasion as a pivotal moment for humanity. “This was no ordinary victory. This was a fork in the road of human civilization. This one really mattered,” Musk said, expressing gratitude to the audience. At one point, Musk placed his right hand over his heart with fingers spread wide, then extended his arm outward and upward, palm down, fingers together, before repeating the motion to the audience behind him. “My heart goes out to you. It is thanks to you that the future of civilization is assured,” he said as he concluded the gesture.
The gesture was dissected across social media platforms, with some questioning its intent. “Did Elon Musk Sieg Heil at Trump’s inauguration?” asked a headline in the Jerusalem Post. However, the Anti-Defamation League, which monitors antisemitism, rejected the notion. “It seems that @elonmusk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute. But we appreciate that people are on edge,” the organization posted. Responding to the controversy, Musk called the accusations a “tired” tactic, adding, “Frankly, they need better dirty tricks. The ‘everyone is Hitler’ attack is sooo tired.” He later shared a Fox video clip of his speech on his platform X, which excluded footage of the gesture. “The future is so exciting,” Musk captioned the post. Critics and defenders alike took to X, with some accusing Musk of aligning with far-right ideologies and others arguing his gesture was a harmless display of passion. Musk has recently drawn attention for his support of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, hosting a broadcast with its leader earlier this month.
