On Tuesday, Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump faced off in their first—and potentially only—debate before the November 5 election. As polls indicate a tight race, the debate’s impact could be significant. Here’s a look at the key moments:
Harris came prepared to rattle Trump, as her campaign had predicted. She suggested viewers attend one of Trump’s rallies, where he’s known for making controversial claims like windmills causing cancer. She mocked the rallies, saying attendees would leave bored and exhausted. Trump, who prides himself on his large crowds, responded defensively. “My rallies are the biggest, most incredible in history,” he declared, while accusing Harris of inflating her own rally numbers. Trump also made a baseless claim that immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were harming pets, a story debunked by local officials and noted by the debate moderators. Harris used Trump’s outlandish statements to criticize his temperament and past actions, particularly his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.
As the debate progressed, Harris’s strategy seemed effective, with Trump frequently on the defensive. When questioned about the January 6 Capitol riot, Trump denied significant involvement, sticking to his false narrative of winning the 2020 election. Harris seized the moment to argue for moving past Trump’s divisive actions, highlighting his unpopularity and perceived lack of integrity. She also ridiculed Trump’s self-proclaimed international standing, suggesting world leaders were mocking him, a reversal of Trump’s own criticism of President Biden.
The debate kicked off with a sharp exchange on the economy. Harris outlined her recent economic proposals, including a substantial tax credit for startups. Trump countered with his focus on tariffs and protectionism, but Harris’s detailed plans seemed to put Trump on the defensive on an issue where he usually leads.
Abortion also became a contentious topic. Harris, who polls better on this issue, challenged Trump’s defense of the 2022 Supreme Court ruling that left abortion regulations to the states. Trump inaccurately claimed bipartisan support for the decision and made dubious assertions about post-birth abortions. Harris pushed back, questioning whether the current restrictions reflected public will, and pressed Trump on whether he would veto a federal abortion ban, which he dodged.
Finally, the debate included a fiery exchange on the topic of “weaponized” justice. Trump accused Harris and Biden of orchestrating the legal troubles he faces, including charges related to his 2020 election efforts and classified documents. Harris countered by highlighting Trump’s own threats to prosecute political opponents if re-elected. Overall, the debate was marked by sharp exchanges and strong rebuttals, setting the stage for a heated electoral contest.
