As the 2024 presidential campaign unfolds, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a significant topic of debate, revealing sharp differences between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump on how to manage this rapidly advancing technology.

Just days after President Joe Biden’s comprehensive executive order on AI was signed last year, Vice President Kamala Harris highlighted the U.S. approach at a global AI summit. In London last November, Harris underscored the importance of addressing immediate AI-related risks without impeding innovation. She framed her argument around real-world impacts, saying, “When a senior is kicked off his healthcare plan because of a faulty AI algorithm, is that not existential for him? When a woman is threatened by an abusive partner with explicit deepfake photographs, is that not existential for her?”

Harris’ strategy focuses on implementing robust protections against current AI threats while fostering technological growth.

On the other hand, Donald Trump has expressed a desire to “cancel” Biden’s AI executive order if elected. His running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, aligns with this view, influenced by connections to Silicon Valley advocates who favor less restrictive AI regulations. Vance’s stance reflects a belief in reducing regulatory barriers to allow innovation to flourish.

Despite AI’s growing influence on daily life, it has not yet become a top priority for voters. However, the 2024 election may be the first to feature distinct and competing visions on how to lead the U.S. through the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence.
