The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is set to issue a ruling on Friday regarding emergency measures in a case filed against Israel by South Africa, supported by over 70 countries. The case alleges genocide in Gaza.

In a lawsuit filed on December 29, South Africa has sought interim injunctions, including an immediate halt to Israel’s military operations in Gaza and access to humanitarian assistance. The 17-judge ICJ panel will not address the main question of genocide violation at this stage.

The hearings, held on January 11 and 12, featured South Africa presenting alleged atrocities in Gaza. The Israeli legal team challenged the ICJ’s jurisdiction and accused South Africa of collaborating with Hamas.

At least 65 countries from the non-aligned bloc, excluding Russia and China, have supported South Africa’s case. India has not provided an official comment.
Despite its usual stance of boycotting international tribunals, Israel sent a high-level legal team to the hearings, indicating the case’s significance. The ICJ ruling may impact Israel’s international standing, as any court order to halt operations would be substantial.
