Tensions escalated in Gaza City on Thursday as Israel initiated a military operation targeting Hamas militants, prompting residents of the Shejaia neighborhood to evacuate south amidst tank movements and aerial bombardments.

The operation, described by Israel as the final stages against Hamas militants, led to intense clashes and airstrikes overnight, causing significant destruction and casualties. Mohammad Jamal, 25, a resident of Gaza City, described the scene as reminiscent of the war’s onset, with buildings shaking and homes destroyed.

According to the Palestinian Civil Emergency Service, at least seven people have been confirmed dead in Shejaia, with fears of additional casualties trapped under rubble. Disturbing footage obtained by Reuters captured residents, including women and children carrying belongings, fleeing the area amidst the chaos.

In response to the escalating violence, an Israeli military spokesperson issued a directive urging residents to evacuate to a designated humanitarian zone south on Salah al-Din Street for their safety. The spokesperson declined to comment on casualty reports from Shejaia.

As the situation remains fluid, international concerns mount over the humanitarian impact of the conflict, with efforts underway to provide aid and support to affected civilians.

The developments come amid ongoing efforts by regional and international stakeholders to broker a ceasefire and alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
