In a devastating early morning airstrike on Saturday, an Israeli missile struck the Tabeen school in Gaza City, killing over 60 people and injuring 47, according to Palestinian health authorities. The school, which had been repurposed as a shelter for displaced residents, has become the scene of one of the deadliest incidents in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The Israeli military confirmed the airstrike, asserting that the school was being used as a Hamas command centre at the time of the attack. Hamas has strongly denied this claim, maintaining that the school was solely being used as a refuge for civilians.

Witnesses reported that the strike occurred before dawn while many inside the school were praying at a mosque or sleeping. Abu Anas, a local resident involved in the rescue efforts, described the chaotic scene, stating that the first and second missiles struck with no prior warning. “We recovered them as body parts,” he said, describing the horrific aftermath.

Three missiles hit the school and the adjoining mosque, where approximately 6,000 displaced individuals were taking shelter from the conflict, according to Mahmoud Bassal, a spokesperson for Gaza’s Civil Defence. The attack resulted in many casualties, with a significant number of victims being women and children. The death toll is expected to rise as more bodies are recovered.

The United Nations reported that as of July 6, 477 out of 564 schools in Gaza had been directly hit or damaged during the conflict. This strike follows a similar incident in June, when an Israeli attack on a school sheltering displaced Palestinians resulted in at least 33 fatalities, including 12 women and children.
