In a recent address at an Asia Society event in New York, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the critical role of the India-China relationship in shaping Asia’s future and, by extension, the global landscape. He pointed out that the simultaneous rise of both nations presents a “unique challenge” in contemporary geopolitics.Jaishankar remarked, “For Asia to be truly multi-polar, the dynamics between India and China must reflect that. Their relationship will not only determine the future of our continent but also potentially influence global trends.” He noted that the current state of affairs between the two countries is “significantly disturbed,” a situation rooted in a complex historical context, including a conflict in 1962.
While preparing for his upcoming address at the UN General Assembly, Jaishankar engaged in various bilateral discussions and responded to questions regarding China. He acknowledged the complicated nature of their relationship, emphasizing that both nations are unique as the only two with populations exceeding a billion, sharing borders and overlapping interests. He mentioned that approximately 75% of disengagement issues have been addressed, although significant challenges remain regarding patrolling along the Line of Actual Control. Jaishankar stated, “While we’ve managed to resolve many friction points, patrol arrangements established post-2020 still need clarification.”
He further elaborated on the broader implications of troop deployments along the border, calling attention to the need for de-escalation and peace to foster a more constructive bilateral relationship. Reflecting on the border disputes, he reminded that the 3,500-kilometer boundary is entirely contested, necessitating stability for the relationship to progress. Jaishankar recalled the events of 2020, when significant troop movements violated existing agreements, exacerbating tensions and leading to tragic clashes, including the Galwan incident. He stressed that until peace is restored and existing agreements are honored, the broader relationship between India and China will remain strained.
