Harris praised Walz’s record of “delivering for working families” and highlighted his blend of progressive achievements and Midwestern charm. The Minnesota governor, who served in the U.S. Army National Guard and was a former high school teacher, brings a diverse background to the ticket. His tenure as a U.S. Congressman before becoming governor in 2018 has been marked by efforts to expand social programs, including free school meals, climate change initiatives, and tax relief for the middle class.
“Joining Vice President Harris in this race is the honor of a lifetime,” Walz stated, echoing his enthusiasm for the campaign. He emphasized Harris’s vision for politics and expressed his excitement with a social media post likening the campaign to the first day of school.
Walz’s selection is seen as a strategic move to attract Midwestern voters, especially those in battleground states like Wisconsin and Michigan. With his background in the National Guard and as a former football coach, Walz is expected to appeal to a broad demographic, including rural voters who have recently leaned toward Trump.
The choice of Walz, a figure who has received backing from influential Democrats such as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is also aimed at revitalizing Democratic hopes after President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race in late July.
As Harris and Walz prepare for the November 5 election, they will face off against Trump and Vance. Walz has already begun campaigning energetically, employing his signature down-to-earth style and “Dad joke” humor to connect with voters. The Harris campaign has leveraged this approach to differentiate their ticket from the Trump-Vance duo, portraying their rivals as out of touch with everyday Americans.
