In a high-stakes presidential debate on Tuesday, Democratic contender Kamala Harris decisively put Republican opponent Donald Trump on the defensive, delivering a barrage of critiques on his suitability for office, stance on abortion restrictions, and ongoing legal troubles. Harris, a seasoned former prosecutor, dominated the debate from the outset, repeatedly provoking a visibly agitated Trump.
During the exchange, Harris criticized Trump’s campaign events, suggesting that attendees often leave his rallies out of “exhaustion and boredom.” In response, Trump boasted about the size and grandeur of his rallies, countering with a bizarre and unfounded claim about immigrants in Springfield, Ohio allegedly eating pets—an assertion echoed by his running mate, Senator JD Vance.Harris, visibly amused, seized the opportunity to highlight the extremity of Trump’s statements. Her strategy, as her advisers had planned, was to elicit memorable moments that would resonate on social media.
With the election just eight weeks away and early voting about to commence in some states, this debate—being the only scheduled face-off—was a critical chance for both candidates to present their platforms to millions of viewers. Although the debate touched on issues like immigration, foreign policy, and healthcare, it offered few concrete policy details. Wall Street remained uneasy, with the debate offering little clarity on major policy issues. Nonetheless, betting markets seemed to favor Harris, whose forceful approach succeeded in putting Trump in the spotlight. Trump, meanwhile, continued to propagate false claims about election fraud, labeled Harris a “Marxist,” and falsely asserted that migrants were responsible for a crime wave.
