New Delhi/Panjab Post
Lockheed Martin and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) have announced a new collaboration aimed at strengthening defense and aerospace ties between India and the US. The partnership will focus on the C-130J Super Hercules tactical airlifter, a key asset used by the Indian Air Force (IAF), which currently operates a fleet of 12 such aircraft.
This new agreement builds on the existing joint venture, Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Limited, which manufactures components for the C-130J at its Hyderabad facility. According to Lockheed Martin, the latest deal represents a major advancement in both enhancing India’s defense capabilities and deepening strategic relations between the two countries.
The collaboration will involve two main initiatives:
Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) Facility: The agreement includes plans to establish an MRO center in India to support the IAF’s fleet of C-130Js and potentially aircraft from other nations. This facility aims to boost local support capabilities and operational efficiency.
Expanded Manufacturing and Assembly: There are also plans to increase the manufacturing and assembly capacity for the C-130J in India. This expansion would cater to the IAF’s medium transport aircraft (MTA) program and could see Indian production lines dedicated to building aircraft for both the domestic and global markets.
The agreement is contingent upon approvals from both the US and Indian governments. Meanwhile, Lockheed Martin will continue its production of the C-130J for the US government and international clients at its existing facility in Marietta, Georgia. If awarded the MTA contract, additional production and assembly capacity will be set up in India.
