Male/Panjab Post
Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu is set to make an official visit to India “very soon,” according to a statement from Heena Waleed, the chief spokesperson for the President’s Office. The exact date of Muizzu’s visit is still under discussion, as both countries are coordinating a time that suits their leaders. The announcement comes on a day marked by political upheaval in the Maldives. Two junior ministers, who were suspended in January for making derogatory remarks about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have resigned from their posts. This move highlights ongoing tensions despite the upcoming diplomatic visit.
Muizzu, who has shown a preference for China in his foreign policy, had previously traveled to New Delhi on June 9 to attend Modi’s swearing-in ceremony. Unlike previous Maldivian presidents who visited New Delhi as their first international trip, Muizzu’s initial visits were to Turkiye and China. His visit to India was described as a “success” for the Maldives, reflecting the positive reception of Modi’s invitation. While the timing of Muizzu’s visit remains to be finalized, discussions are actively ongoing to arrange a suitable date.
