Chandigarh/Panjab Post
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has officially approved the recommendations of the Ram Nath Kovind committee for implementing simultaneous elections across India using common electoral rolls. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the unanimous decision, confirming that all BJP allies are in support of the initiative.
The plan will be executed in two phases: the first will involve simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies, while the second phase will see local body elections held within 100 days of the national election’s conclusion. Vaishnaw stated that this approach aims to promote national development and streamline governance. While no specific rollout date was given, the government plans to form an implementation committee to address legal and constitutional requirements. Home Minister Amit Shah indicated that the initiative would be implemented during the current NDA government’s tenure. Vaishnaw emphasized the potential positive impacts of simultaneous elections on the economy and democracy, encouraging widespread discussions on the plan. The proposal, which echoes the practice of simultaneous elections from the early years of Indian democracy, requires constitutional amendments to establish fixed terms for all electoral bodies and common electoral rolls. The Kovind committee’s comprehensive report was submitted to President Droupadi Murmu in March.
