Tel Aviv/Panjab Post
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has thrown a wrench into a US-backed initiative aimed at ending the eight-month conflict in Gaza, stating he will only accept a “partial” cease-fire that falls short of concluding the war, which has heightened tensions in the region.
In televised remarks, Netanyahu emphasized his readiness for a limited agreement focused on the return of hostages held in Gaza, estimated at around 120 individuals. However, he asserted that Israel remains committed to pursuing military objectives aimed at eradicating Hamas, signaling a divergence from the comprehensive cease-fire envisioned in recent proposals.
The comments from Netanyahu, who labeled the proposed deal as insufficient, could complicate efforts by international mediators striving to broker a lasting peace between Israel and Hamas. The US, Israel’s key ally, had spearheaded a diplomatic push for the truce plan, which included phased releases of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
Netanyahu’s stance underscores deep-seated distrust between the parties, with Hamas insisting on a permanent cease-fire and complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza as prerequisites for any agreement. In contrast, Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s intent to dismantle Hamas’ military infrastructure, highlighting ongoing uncertainties over the path to resolution.
The Palestinian militant group responded swiftly, characterizing Netanyahu’s remarks as a rebuff of the US-supported initiative and accusing him of perpetuating aggression against Gaza residents. The development marks a setback in efforts to de-escalate the protracted conflict, which has seen periodic flare-ups despite sporadic truce attempts.
