A tragic incident unfolded at a Shiite mosque in Oman where five individuals lost their lives in a rare shooting attack carried out by multiple assailants. Among the victims was an Indian national, while several others sustained injuries, including a police officer, according to local authorities on Tuesday.
The Royal Oman Police disclosed that the attack occurred late Monday in Muscat’s Wadi Kabir neighborhood, with no immediate motive or suspects identified. Reports indicated that three attackers were neutralized, and the incident left 28 individuals of various nationalities wounded.
The shooting incident, which coincided with the upcoming Ashoura observances in the Islamic month of Muharram, a significant period for Shiite Muslims, has drawn widespread condemnation. The US Embassy cautioned its citizens to steer clear of the affected area.
Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attack on Imam Bargah Ali bin Abu Talib mosque, noting four Pakistani fatalities and dozens injured. They expressed readiness to assist Omani authorities in pursuing justice for the perpetrators during this sacred month.
Iran, a Shiite-majority nation, also denounced the violence, emphasizing solidarity with the victims and Oman. Meanwhile, the Embassy of India in Muscat confirmed the loss of one Indian national in the tragic incident, with another Indian citizen injured.
Such incidents are unusual in Oman, a country known for its stability in the region. Investigations into the attack are ongoing as authorities work to ascertain the circumstances behind this shocking act of violence in a place of worship.
