Pakistan’s Supreme Court delivered a significant ruling today, declaring that Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party is entitled to more than 20 reserved seats for women and minorities in Parliament. This legal victory follows a contentious election period where PTI candidates, contesting as independents due to the party losing its election symbol, formed alliances with the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).

The case, which challenged the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision, was heard by a 13-member full bench led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa. The court’s decision overturns previous rulings and affirms PTI’s right to these reserved seats, despite earlier setbacks.

Chief Justice Isa announced the verdict, which emphasized that the denial of an election symbol does not hinder a political party’s constitutional right to participate in elections and nominate candidates. The court instructed PTI to submit a list of its candidates for reserved seats within 15 days.

While the ruling is seen as a legal triumph for PTI and a setback for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s coalition, it does not immediately threaten the federal government’s stability. The decision underscores ongoing legal and political dynamics in Pakistan ahead of future electoral processes.
