Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a 20-year-old Pakistani national, has been charged with plotting a terror attack on Jewish communities in New York. The planned attack was reportedly timed to coincide with the anniversary of the October 7 terror attacks in Israel, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Khan is accused of attempting to support ISIS and targeting New York due to its large Jewish population. Arrested on Wednesday in Canada, Khan faces charges of providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization. The charges were made public on Friday. FBI Director Christopher Wray praised the FBI’s efforts in thwarting Khan’s plans, emphasizing the bureau’s commitment to combating terrorism. Attorney General Merrick Garland also condemned the alleged plot, asserting that Jewish communities, like all communities, should be free from fear of hate-driven violence.
The investigation began in November 2023 when Khan, who was living in Canada, discussed his ISIS support on an encrypted messaging app with undercover law enforcement officers. Khan allegedly planned to target Jewish institutions around October 7 or 11, aiming to maximize casualties. He even arranged for smuggling to cross into the U.S. and was apprehended near the border on September 4. Khan faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. A federal district court judge will determine his sentence based on U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other factors.
