Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Washington, D.C., to a warm reception despite the chilly weather. His visit marks a key diplomatic engagement, as he prepares for high-level discussions with President Donald Trump. This trip is Modi’s first to the US since Trump’s second term began on January 20. Notably, Modi becomes the fourth global leader to meet Trump post-inauguration, following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, and Jordan’s King Abdullah. The meeting is also one of the earliest interactions between an Indian Prime Minister and a newly sworn-in US President.
Soon after landing, Modi met with US Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard. “Had a productive discussion with @TulsiGabbard in Washington, D.C. Congratulated her on her appointment and exchanged views on strengthening India-US ties,” Modi posted on X. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) stated that the conversation revolved around enhancing intelligence-sharing, particularly in areas such as counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, and strategic global developments. The much-awaited Modi-Trump summit is expected to focus on key issues, including defense cooperation, trade policies, and immigration concerns. President Trump, who has previously criticized India’s trade policies, is likely to push for a fairer trade framework, while Modi is expected to raise concerns over the recent deportation of 104 Indian immigrants, which sparked controversy back home.
Despite differences on certain matters, Modi and Trump share a cordial rapport, with Trump having called Modi the “nicest person” and Modi referring to him as “friend Trump.” India has already made concessions on import duties for certain US products, and further tariff adjustments are under consideration. Beyond trade, Modi has emphasized that his visit aims to deepen India-US strategic cooperation. The US continues to see India as a vital player in maintaining regional stability, particularly as a counterbalance to China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific. During his stay, Modi will reside at Blair House, the official guest residence of the US President, which has hosted visiting dignitaries since its acquisition by the US government in 1942.
