A shocking stabbing attack in Southport, northwest England, has left at least eight people, including children, injured. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the incident as “horrendous,” and authorities have confirmed that a male suspect has been arrested.
Merseyside Police declared a “major incident” following the multiple stabbings that occurred early Monday. Armed officers quickly apprehended a man and confiscated a knife, emphasizing that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The North West Ambulance Service reported treating eight victims with stab wounds, who were transported to various hospitals, including a specialized children’s hospital. In response to the incident, Starmer expressed his distress and gratitude towards the emergency services on social media. “Horrendous and deeply shocking news emerging from Southport,” he stated. “My thoughts are with all those affected, and I thank the police and emergency services for their swift response.”
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, addressing Parliament during a scheduled session, described the situation as “extremely serious.” She conveyed her support to local authorities, including the Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner, and praised the emergency services for their rapid response. “The response to this awful incident is currently unfolding, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” Cooper said.
Merseyside Police reported receiving calls about the stabbings at a property on Hart Street, located north of Liverpool, around 11:50 am local time. Thirteen ambulances were dispatched to the scene in response to the growing number of casualties.
“There are a number of reported casualties, and more details will be confirmed as soon as possible,” the police statement read. “Armed police have detained a male suspect and seized a knife. He is now in custody. The public is advised to avoid the area while we manage this incident. There is no further threat to public safety,” the statement concluded.
