In a notable development ahead of the Haryana Assembly elections, the Supreme Court has granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in connection with the excise policy case. On Friday, Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan ruled in favor of Kejriwal’s release, stipulating a personal bail bond of Rs 10 lakh along with two sureties of the same amount. Kejriwal is anticipated to be released from Tihar Jail later today, following the completion of necessary procedural steps with the trial court and jail authorities.
Kejriwal’s release marks him as the seventh individual to secure bail in relation to the Delhi excise policy case, joining a list that includes AAP leaders Sanjay Singh and Manish Sisodia, BRS leader K Kavitha, former AAP communications head Vijay Nair, businessman Arun Ramchandra Pillai, and alleged intermediary Vinod Chauhan. The Supreme Court has imposed several conditions on Kejriwal’s bail: he is barred from visiting the Chief Minister’s Office and Delhi Secretariat, restricted from signing official documents unless absolutely necessary with clearance from the Delhi Lieutenant Governor, and prohibited from making comments about the case or interacting with witnesses. Additionally, he is not permitted to access official files related to the case.
Reacting to the decision, senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia took to X to express his satisfaction, stating, “Today, once again truth has triumphed over lies and conspiracies. I salute the vision of Baba Saheb Ambedkar who empowered the common man against future threats of dictatorship.” AAP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha also celebrated the verdict on X, welcoming Kejriwal’s return. “Welcome back, Arvind Kejriwal! Truth may face challenges, but it cannot be defeated. The Supreme Court has restored Delhi’s leader from the confines of jail,” Chadha wrote.
