As the November 5 election approaches, former President Donald Trump’s campaign is intensifying efforts to sway infrequent voters in pivotal battleground states. Last month in York, Pennsylvania, Trump campaign volunteers Rachel and Chris Gottberg set out to engage this crucial demographic. Equipped with red “Trump Force Captain” T-shirts and accompanied by their eight-month-old baby, the Gottbergs focused on newly registered and “low propensity” voters—those who don’t regularly participate in elections.
The Trump campaign’s strategy involves a concerted push to mobilize these less consistent voters across seven battleground states. This approach, detailed through interviews with Trump campaign staff, grassroots groups, and Republican officials, represents a significant shift. It’s a high-stakes, labor-intensive tactic aimed at expanding voter outreach beyond traditional bases. Success could lead to a surge of new support, but failure to mobilize these voters poses a risk.
This targeted effort contrasts with the approach of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, who, backed by substantial campaign funding, is focusing on a broader outreach strategy. Harris’s campaign is engaging various voter groups, including women, through rallies and registration drives to build a more extensive support base.
Infrequent voters are seen as a critical yet challenging group to mobilize, making Trump’s campaign’s strategy both innovative and risky in the lead-up to the election.
