Paris/Panjab Post
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has upheld the disqualification of Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat from the Olympic Games final, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) announced today. The ad-hoc division of CAS rejected Phogat’s appeal against the ruling by the United World Wrestling (UWW) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Phogat faced disqualification due to being 100 grams overweight during the weigh-in for the women’s 50kg freestyle final. The decision has been met with disappointment from the IOA, with President PT Usha expressing shock at the Sole Arbitrator’s ruling.
In its statement, the IOA emphasized the significant impact of the decision on Phogat and the broader sporting community. As a result of the appeal rejection, India’s final medal count for the Paris Olympics stands at six, comprising one silver and five bronze medals.
