Yunus Urges Sheikh Hasina to Remain Silent in India Until Extradition Request

Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has called for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to refrain from making political statements while she remains in India, describing her remarks as an “unfriendly gesture.” Yunus emphasized that Hasina’s silence is essential to mitigate tensions between the two nations until Bangladesh formally requests her return.
In a recent interview with PTI at his residence in Dhaka, Yunus, who assumed his role after Hasina’s removal, underscored that while Bangladesh values its relationship with India, it is crucial for New Delhi to reconsider its view of Bangladeshi politics. He criticized the narrative that only Hasina’s leadership can ensure stability in Bangladesh, urging India to adopt a more balanced perspective.
Hasina, who fled to India following significant anti-government protests on August 5, has been vocal about seeking justice for recent violence in Bangladesh. Yunus stated that her statements from India are causing discomfort and complicating matters further. He stressed that her continued public commentary exacerbates the situation and makes her return to Bangladesh imperative for justice.
Discussing the broader India-Bangladesh relationship, Yunus expressed a desire for improved ties but criticized the existing narrative in India that portrays Bangladeshi politics in a one-dimensional manner. He also dismissed concerns raised about attacks on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, calling them “excuses” and emphasizing the need for both nations to collaborate to enhance their currently strained relationship.
Looking ahead, Yunus suggested that bilateral treaties, including those related to transit and the Adani electricity deal, may need to be reviewed. He reaffirmed the interim government’s commitment to addressing past injustices and working towards a more cooperative future with India.
